Given its vast size, extensive reach, and expertise across both disciplinary and interdisciplinary domains, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) is instrumental in fostering inclusive excellence (IE) at Mason. Through its ongoing and past initiatives focused on diversity and inclusion, CHSS has been a pioneer in developing policies and practices that bolster Mason's distinct role within the higher education landscape of the Commonwealth of Virginia and nationally.

Engaged in a proactive, collective process of self-reflection and transformation, CHSS aims to address the needs of its diverse student body, including many of whom are first-generation college students, Federal Pell Grant recipients, transfer students, and post-traditional learners, thereby supporting the institution's mission as a comprehensive public research university and contributing to the well-being of the National Capital Region.

As a beacon of inclusive excellence and engaged communities, CHSS is committed to promoting understanding and civic engagement, while continuing to excel in research, teaching, and service. By collaborating with various stakeholders within the college and across the university, CHSS seeks to make IE a shared responsibility, ensuring that Mason is a welcoming, safe, and nurturing environment for students, staff, and faculty from all backgrounds.
